Brian Schneider had a relic sitting in his locker yesterday: his old Montreal Expos catcher’s mask.

Are the Nationals planning to wear retro uniforms one night this week? No, Schneider is giving the mask to Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby, who grew up an Expos fan.

The deal was arranged by clubhouse managers in both cities who know each other, and Schneider will be receiving an autographed Crosby jersey in return.

“He has meant almost everything. I know without him we’d still be in last place. And that’s where we are with him. But we’d be in much worse shape.”

— Manny Acta, on first baseman Dmitri Young’s importance to the Nationals
