Virtual tours of exciting places

A new Web site invites home-schoolers to explore exciting people and locations, starting in New York City.

At www.MeetMeAtThe Corner.org, families can take virtual tours and get to know people involved in interesting professions.

The hosts of the mini-videos are all home-schoolers, ages 8 to 12, who conduct interviews with adult professionals and narrate much of the visual footage. The site is the brainchild of noted children's author Donna Guthrie, who commutes from her home in Colorado Springs, Colo., with her physician husband, Michael, for several-month stints to oversee the taping of the reports in New York City.

"I always wanted to live in New York, and now that my children are grown, I got the idea of doing a virtual field trip Web site for home-schoolers, starting in New York."

Pulling together an exciting crew of professionals, including her 29-year-old son, Colin, a sound engineer who works with Francis Ford Coppola's Zoetrope Aubry Productions, Ms. Guthrie has taped 27 programs, of which nine currently can be viewed on the site.

"We've covered the blessing of the animals in St. John's Cathedral. We've got a story on a beekeeper who manages hives on the rooftop of a skyscraper over Broadway. There's a story on a subway musician, and a boy who plays the Irish fiddle," Ms. Guthrie says.

Of course, the Web site features some of the more standard New York locations: the Empire State Building, Central Park's Puppet Theatre and the Forbes Museum, among others.

Not only can home-schooling families subscribe and watch for free, but they are invited to create and send in their own projects. This will help create a worldwide network of home-schoolers sharing information about their own locations and the interesting things they are doing in their own learning.
