From this week’s edition of “I’ll believe it when I see it,” Mike Green is in the Capitals’ lineup and Michal Neuvirth is in net for Game 1 against the Rangers at Verizon Center.
It’s Green’s first game since an elbow to the head by New York’s Derek Stepan on Feb. 25. As late as 5:30 p.m. Wednesday Bruce Boudreau said Green would “maybe” play. Sean Collins even took warm-ups as the seventh defenseman.
But when the lineup sheet was revealed, there was No. 52, Mike Green. He’s set to at least open the game paired with John Erskine.
Neuvirth makes his first Stanley Cup playoff start, but he won the past two Calder Cups with the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League.
He’s up against Rangers workhorse Henrik Lundqvist, who’s starting his 27th straight game.
“He may be the best goalie in the league, but I think our shooters are better than theirs,” Neuvirth said Tuesday. “It’s gonna be a good challenge for me.”
