When asked in Ottawa who his starting goaltender would be, Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau joked, “Holtby, maybe.” Everyone knew it was going to be either Michal Neuvirth or Semyon Varlamov.

But now Braden Holtby is back around the team, recalled as a “Black Ace” following the Hershey Bears’ elimination.

The 21-year-old went 10-2-2 with the Caps in his limited action.

It’s not a move that signals any kind of injury to Neuvirth or Varlamov but rather some insurance just in case.

There was no immediate word if the team would make any other call-ups after the Bears were knocked out of the Calder Cup Playoffs Sunday.
