It’s not exactly like calling in the cavalry, but the Capitals are getting a little deeper thanks to reinforcements from the Hershey Bears.
The Caps on Wednesday recalled forwards Mathieu Perreault and Steve Pinizzotto and defenseman Patrick McNeill to make up their “Black Aces” squad. They join goaltender Braden Holtby, who was recalled Tuesday.
“They were good players in Hershey and they’ve got specific things,” coach Bruce Boudreau said. “But you’ve got checkers, scorers, offensive defensemen, a goaltender. I think they’re all young, great prospects, too. We thought it’s a great experience and if they get in then they’re going to be good players for us.”
Andrew Gordon (high ankle sprain) is expected to join the Caps when he’s healthy, too.
The “Black Aces” are skating separately from the Caps, but that doesn’t mean Holtby isn’t thrilled to be around again.
“It’s an exciting team right now and guys are playing very well so I’m excited just to be a little part of it,” Holtby said. “Obviously it’s disappointing for us four that got called up here because [it means] our team in Hershey [was eliminated], but at the same time it’s an opportunity and it’s going to be fun.”
