The Washington Capitals have seven healthy defenseman, but the pick to sit Thursday night nevertheless came as a bit of a surprise.

Roman Hamrlik will be a healthy scratch against the Pittsburgh Penguins, coach Dale Hunter confirmed about two hours before game time.

“It’s feeling,” Hunter said in explaining the move. “It’s one of those things that we just decide as a coaching staff.”

Hamrlik, 37, is in the first season of a two-year, $7 million contract. He has one goal, a minus-10 rating and 18 penalty minutes in 23 games.

Jeff Schultz is back in the lineup, replacing Hamrlik.
