When Mike Green missed a day of on-ice workouts last week, coach Dale Hunter denied the notion that the Capitals All-Star defenseman had a setback. When he was not on the ice a second straight day, Hunter said the team was doing a combination of on- and off-ice things to help Green bounce back from a groin injury.
Then Green was not on the ice for Monday’s practice. He posted on Twitter Sunday night a reference to going through airport security, so his absence was not surprising.
Green has not played since straining his right groin Nov. 11 at the New Jersey Devils. He has missed 14 games with that injury after being out six with an ankle problem.
After skating four days in a row last week, Green reported no change in his status. The Caps are still listing him as day-to-day, but he’s several steps and likely a long way away from returning to game action.
Every other Caps player was on the ice, including Jay Beagle (concussion) and Matt Hendricks (right knee). The lines remained the same:
Alex Ovechkin - Nicklas Backstrom - Alexander Semin
Troy Brouwer - Marcus Johansson - Jeff Halpern
Jason Chimera - Brooks Laich - Joel Ward
Matt Hendricks / Cody Eakin - Mathieu Perreault - Mike Knuble
