BUFFALO, N.Y. | Mathieu Perreault left Monday night’s game with 5:59 left in the third period after a scary collision with Buffalo Sabres defenseman Christian Ehrhoff in the corner. The hit appeared to push Perreault’s own stick into his midsection and he went down in pain.

I think he lost his wind,” coach Dale Hunter said. “He went into the boards and [his] stick hit him in the tummy.”

Trainer Greg Smith rushed out onto the ice to attend to Perreault, who was able to skate off under his own power. The young center took three more shifts after the injury, but the news after the game was not good.

Perreault was taken to a local hospital for what a team spokesman called “precautionary reasons” and an upper-body injury. The extent of the injury was not immediately clear, but the 23-year-old did not fly back to Dulles with the Caps.

The spokesman said Perreault would remain in Buffalo overnight, though he was not necessarily going to spend the night at the hospital.

The plan is for Perreault to rejoin the team Tuesday back in the D.C. area.

Perreault suffered a broken nose a year to the day ago at the Carolina Hurricanes.
