Mathieu Perreault’s collision with Christian Ehrhoff in the third period on Monday night was a scary one. Perreault wound up with his own stick striking his gut.

And though Perreault took three more shifts after that, the pain intensified after the game and he was forced to spend much of the night at a Buffalo hospital. He said Wednesday there was a lot of concern about his spleen, and he stayed at the hospital until about 2 a.m.

At that point there was nothing for the 23-year-old to do but get to the airport and try to get some sleep before a 6:15 a.m. flight back to Washington.

Perreault took part in Tuesday’s Washington Capitals practice and Wednesday’s morning skate, but he said he’s taking a rest and will not play Wednesday night against the New York Rangers.

In Perreault’s absence, the Caps will see a return of Jay Beagle after missing 31 games with a concussion.
