Finally, on Saturday night the Caps beat the Ottawa Senators 3-2 in overtime. Unprompted, game-winning goal-scorer Brooks Laich talked about being glad to get Hunter his first win as an NHL coach.

Again dressed in his navy blue suit and a red tie, Hunter sounded relieved to have this milestone done with.

“It feels good,” Hunter said. “It’s one of those things that you want to get over with right away, hopefully the first game but it ended up being the third. It’s one of the things you want to get under your belt and move on.”

Moving on means an off-day for the Caps on Sunday and a flight to Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. They play the Florida Panthers Monday night in Sunrise, practice there Tuesday and visit the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday.
