SUNRISE, Fla. | When the Florida Panthers stepped onto the ice, two goalies were there. One was Scott Clemmensen, but the other was certainly not Jose Theodore.

The ex-Washington Capitals goaltender and former league MVP was absent. In one net was emergency practice goaltender Erik Bentley, the goaltending coach at Florida Atlantic.

The reason for Theodore’s absence was not immediately clear. It was an optional practice, so optional that even coach Kevin Dineen wasn’t in attendance.

With Dineen not speaking until 6:15 p.m. at BankAtlantic Center, no one around the team was certain who would start in net against the Caps.

Matt Bradley, as expected, was not on the ice. He has been nursing an upper-body injury.
