Alex Ovechkin did not earn a suspension or fine for spearing Chris Neil on Wednesday night. That was confirmed Thursday afternoon by an NHL spokesman.
It happened at about the 8:08 mark of the second period. Neil had just checked Ovechkin near the far boards in the Capitals’ zone, and they were both skating up the ice. Ovechkin appeared to hit the Senators forward in the midsection with the end of his stick.
Neil went down and was penalized two minutes for diving; Ovechkin did not receive a penalty. Neil went down the tunnel but did not miss significant time.
The Caps’ broadcast team admitted the referee missed Ovechkin’s jab at Neil, which probably should have been a two-minute minor. But it did not lead to any supplemental discipline.
