It’s official, the Capitals have cut ties with Anton Gustafsson. The former first-round pick cleared unconditional waivers at noon on Thursday and was given his release.

Gustafsson is now an unrestricted free agent in the NHL, but his agent, J.P. Barry, told The Washington Times on Wednesday that the 21st pick in the 2008 draft plans to stay in Europe.

“He’s doing better overt there and he wants to continue developing there,” Barry said.

Gustafsson, who played just one game with the Hershey Bears in 2009-10, never adapted to life and hockey in North America. He has one more year left on his contract in Switzerland and then will make plans for the future, according to Barry.
