The Capitals bought a lottery ticket of sorts Thursday, acquiring left wing Taylor Stefishen from the Nashville Predators for a conditional seventh-round pick … in 2013.
Essentially the Caps gave up nothing for the 20-year-old, who was a fifth-round selection by Nashville all the way back in the 2008 draft. He put up sick numbers in the British Columbia Junior Hockey League in 2006-07 and 2007-08 (58 goals, 79 assists, 144 penalty minutes in 116 games) before moving on to Ohio State.
In two seasons with the Buckeyes, Stefishen had eight goals and 13 assists in 42 games; he then put up 24 and 43 in 67 games this past year with Prince George of the Western Hockey League.
The 6-foot, 185-pounder is now too old to return to the WHL and seems a likely candidate for South Carolina of the ECHL or Hershey of the AHL.
The Caps have until June 1, 2012 to sign him.
