On Friday night at the NHL draft, Capitals general manager George McPhee was asked about impending unrestricted free agent Brooks Laich and had this to say:
“I don’t think this is the time to talk about our free agents.”
Owner Ted Leonsis didn’t name names Monday, but he did say his team would make changes – possibly including trades – when free agency opens Friday.
“We will always recraft the team to try to improve and to become a better team come playoff time,” Leonsis wrote on his blog. “We now move on to free agency. We want to keep some players. We want to sign some players. …
“And then don’t be surprised if you see some trades. It takes two to tango. We want to change and improve. “
In his next post, Leonsis went off about reports linking the Caps to free agent winger Jaromir Jagr, whose infamous career in Washington will not be revisited.
