When healthy, the Capitals have nine defensemen. Right now they’re down to six.

Dennis Wideman is now “week-to-week” with a lower-body injury, but the team’s other two injured defensemen – Mike Green and Tom Poti – are at least making some progress.

Green (concussion) skated on his own again before practice Thursday with Caps coach Bruce Boudreau going into third person to talk about his hope for the All-Star defenseman.

“He’s coming along well,” Boudreau said. “And I say that hoping that tomorrow … again it’s Bruce hoping that he might be able to come out with the team.”

Poti skated through practice Thursday and took part in the scratches skate along with the assistant coaches, Eric Fehr, Jay Beagle and D.J. King.

“It’s like syrup running down a tree,” Boudreau said of Poti’s status. “It’s slow, but at least it’s progress. It’s getting there.”
