Jeff Schultz is Capitals' healthy scratch defenseman

NEWARK, N.J. | With many indications that Mike Green was returning to the Capitals’ lineup Friday night, it was worth asking coach Bruce Boudreau about what he’d have to do to make room for him.

Someone would have to be a healthy scratch.

“It always makes it a hard choice when you’ve got seven established NHL defensemen,” Boudreau said. “But we’ll figure it out.”

The Caps figured it out by scratching Jeff Schultz, who has been much-maligned for defensive mistakes this season but has four assists and a plus-4 rating.

Green was paired with Roman Hamrlik; Karl Alzner with John Carlson and John Erskine with Dennis Wideman.

If Green does not respond well enough Friday night and Saturday, it’s possible Schultz is back in against the Devils Saturday night at Verizon Center.
