It didn’t take long for John Erskine to make an impact on the Capitals’ season. As of Monday he was “getting closer” to being cleared to take contact. Tuesday morning he was set to make his season debut. Tuesday night he looked sharp and even put up an assist.
“With John, I was really, really pleasantly surprised. He looked like he didn’t miss a beat,” coach Bruce Boudreau said. “I thought he played a great game, considering he’s been off for so long and hasn’t even had a meaningful scrimmage yet.”
Erskine registered a plus-1 rating with the assist in 15:49. And while Boudreau noted that the 31-year-old defenseman was probably tired at the end, the opposite was true.
“I felt pretty good. I think as the game went on, I was getting my legs back and just kind of getting back in the rhythm of things,” Erskine said. “By the end of the game I felt pretty good.”
Erskine started alongside John Carlson and layer played with Dennis Wideman. He took 19 shifts.
