TORONTO | Red-and-white-hot spotlight. “Hockey Night in Canada.” Toronto. The stage Alex Ovechkin is supposed to shine on a stage like this.
Saturday night was not his best performance. Ovechkin was held without a point for the fourth straight game and registered a minus-3 rating in the Capitals’ 7-1 loss to the Maple Leafs.
“I think that everybody wants to win and everybody play hard, but sometimes we didn’t play good,” the captain said. “We make mistakes what we know we don’t have to do, and it cost us. We just give them all the chances what they have in the first period with our mistakes. It’s hard to realize, but they just outscore us.”
Ovechkin finished with eight shots, but five came in a third period in which the Maple Leafs were already conserving energy for their Sunday game at the Hurricanes.
The man who has led the NHL in shots every year he has been in the league didn’t attempt his first shot until the 8:42 mark of the second period – that’s 28:42 into the game. The Caps were already trailing 4-1 at that point.
Ovechkin has seven goals and seven assists in 18 games.
