Nicklas Backstrom didn’t want to let on about whether Alexander Semin was playing for the Capitals on Wednesday night against the Winnipeg Jets, two days after being a healthy scratch.
“Good try, though,” he said.
Semin will be in the Caps’ lineup, judging from the morning skate. Mathieu Perreault is in, too. Joel Ward will be the scratched forward.
Semin was a healthy scratch Monday for the first time since his rookie year. He has 18 goals and 17 assists in 32 career games against the Jets/Thrashers.
Ward will be in the press box as a punishment for missing a team meeting.
“I basically slept in, missed a team meeting. So I’ve got to pay the consequences of not playing,” Ward said. “I understand it’s part of the team rules. It’s written. I just made a mistake of sleeping in.”
John Erskine, who suffered a left shoulder setback, will be the scratch on defense. That means Jeff Schultz is in the lineup again.
Tomas Vokoun will start in net for Washington.
