Dale Hunter’s jersey is retired at Verizon Center. But if the Washington Capitals ever win a Stanley Cup with him as coach, they might be raising a blue suit to the rafters.
That’s because it’s the only suit he ever wears – a blue number that has been the constant since 2006. When he steps behind the bench Tuesday, it’ll be with the same one.
“Same one,” Hunter said. “Same blue.”
Hunter is living out of one suitcase since flying into town Monday morning.
“Pretty much. I’ve only got one suit anyways,” he said, drawing laughs. “I wear it every game.
Hunter has worn just that blue suit because capturing the 2005 Memorial Cup with the London Knights brought to an end the era of a hideous tan suit. London Free-Press reporter Ryan Pyette recalled a story from 2005 that included Hunter throwing the tan jacket into the center of a room and letting his players beat it with sticks.
No word of it that would be the case with this blue suit if the Caps win it all.
