George McPhee: No more changes on horizon for Caps

Dale Hunter is the new coach of the Washington Capitals. But fans expecting more change in the very immediate future will be disappointed.

Bruce Boudreau is no longer in charge, but Alex Ovechkin will remain as the captain, and general manager George McPhee said no other moves are on the horizon, at least until Hunter settles into his new job.

I can’t say that we have anything going,” McPhee said. “Certainly we’ve been talking to teams but this has taken a lot of time the last little while. We’ll get working today with Dale and talking about some things and I’ll get back on the phone tomorrow, talking to teams about what might be happening in the marketplace.”

A trade obviously could happen, and McPhee is not showing his hand. But when it comes to Ovechkin and the captaincy, it doesn’t seem like a matter even being debated within the organization.

That’s not going to happen,” McPhee said of removing the “C” from Ovechkin.

Replacing Boudreau with Hunter, McPhee said, was about the team’s performance and not about Ovechkin.

I don’t think this has anything to do with Alex Ovechkin,” McPhee said. “I think it’s got everything to do with this team not playing well.”

Ovechkin has has eight goals, nine assists and a minus-7 rating this season.

“You can be tired with the coach telling you and maybe mistakes and something like that, but again, this is decision [McPhee] makes and we just have to look forward, don’t look back,” Ovechkin said. “Or if we’re going to look back at what happened, we don’t have to talk to [the media] about it. We just have to be now a family in the locker room.”
