Mike Green doesn’t like talking about his own injuries. So he was noticeably unhappy Wednesday morning to discuss his attempt to work back from a right groin strain.

This was the fourth time the Capitals All-Star defenseman has skated – solo – in five days.

“Basically right now I’m just able to get out there and skate a little bit,” a downcast Green said. “I’m not exerting myself too hard yet, but I’m progressing better each day.”

Earlier in the week, general manager George McPhee made it clear there was no timetable for Green’s return to the lineup.

“Yeah, I’d like to be back tomorrow, but that’s not going to happen,” Green said. “It’s just kind of a day-to-day thing, there’s no set schedule. [It’s about] me getting back into shape and making sure that I’m 100 percent healthy, if not 90 percent at least.”

Groin injuries tend to linger, and Green is not pushing himself too hard right now. But he’s making progress in some ways.

“I’ve been out there skating and obviously stopping and starting,” Green said. “As far as game shape with being explosive, I still have some strengthening to do. Who knows how long that’ll take.”
