Mike Green was still taking the scratches skate as of Tuesday, trying to build up strength in his injured right ankle. But Wednesday, when the Capitals as a team were getting bag-skated and asked to participate in aggressive one-on-one battle drills, Green participated.

He asked to participate – even when the coaching staff tried to hold him out.

“It’s a real positive. We did battle drills. We tried to keep him out of them initially. And he said no, he wanted to do it,” coach Bruce Boudreau said. “And he went right in and did it and said he was feeling stronger and stronger. So it was a real positive sign.”

Boudreau had been hopeful but not overconfident about Green playing this weekend, either Friday at the New Jersey Devils or Saturday at home against them. The All-Star defenseman taking part in a tough workout Wednesday seems like a good indication.

“He’s still questionable,” Boudreau said. “But I’m optimistic. Hopefully.”
