Friday and Saturday morning, Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau declined to comment on goaltenders. It got out that Michal Neuvirth was starting Saturday night’s preseason opener vs. the Hurricanes and that the plan was for Tomas Vokoun to start Monday against the Lightning.

A little under two hours before game time, Boudreau was asked if he was finally commenting.

“No. Michal’s starting tonight and Tomas is starting Monday,” he said. “I can’t get any plainer than that.”

Neuvirth said it was a reward for his training camp and preseason, something Boudreau confirmed in a pregame interview with Caps radio play-by-play man John Walton.

“He’s earned it. He’s played great. Tomas will play Monday,” Boudreau told Walton. “We had to play one of them each game, or that was the call and Michal’s playing tonight and we know he’s going to play great, and we know Tomas is going to play great Monday.”
