As the Capitals’ rookies stepped onto the ice Sunday morning, they were joined by a familiar face. Onlookers watched as a player in a black jersey taking a spot on the bench and stretching on the ice.

It was Alex Ovechkin.

But the Caps’ captain didn’t just make a cameo appearance – he stayed on the ice with the rest of the rookies and did some drills.

Ovechkin did say last week that he was approaching his role as captain differently because another year on the job made him more comfortable.

“I don’t have to say, ‘Come on guys; we have to do this and that,’ ” he said. “I have to show them, because I’m one of the leaders of the team.”

Ovechkin seemed to take a nice step toward that whole “leading by example” approach by skating with the rookies on Sunday.
