In previous years, the Capitals got some early competitive juices going in training camp by playing for the Gaetan Duchesne Cup as part of a tournament that pitted groups of players against each other.

That tradition won’t continue this season, as Bruce Boudreau explained, for scheduling reasons.

“There can’t be. We play on the third day of camp. In the past we’ve had five days before our first preseason game,” he said. “We’ve had to alter our normal training camp a little bit.”

The Caps open the preseason Tuesday at 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore against the Predators, then a group will travel to Columbus on Wednesday to visit the Blue Jackets. Two days later a group (probably including some different guys) will play at the Chicago Blackhawks.

There are a lot of games early on – but not as much intrasquad action – and it will be an adjustment for Boudreau and his team.

“I don’t know if I like it,” he said. “We’ve never had it before.”
