It made a lot of sense for the Capitals to send the “Young Guns” and other stars to Baltimore, given the buildup for that game. But coach Bruce Boudreau insisted that strong lineup wasn’t unique to the “Baltimore Hockey Classic.”

“When we go to Columbus, we’re going to put a pretty good lineup together,” he said earlier in the week.

Fans at Nationwide Arena on Wednesday night might be a tad disappointed. The biggest names going are John Carlson, Roman Hamrlik and Braden Holtby.

Caps fans should be anxious, at least, to see some competition. Cody Eakin didn’t seem to stand out for two periods against the Predators on Tuesday, and the coaching staff gets to see the other forwards fighting for a roster spot against the Blue Jackets – Mathieu Perreault, Mattias Sjogren and Christian Hanson.

With roster spots hard to come by, all of those guys getting into this game is a good thing if the team wants clarity.

Without further ado, your projected lineup from the morning skate:

Chris Bourque – Mathieu Perreault – Joel Ward

Jason Chimera – Mattias Sjogren – Jacob Micflikier

Matt Hendricks – Jeff Halpern – Jay Beagle

Andrew Carroll – Christian Hanson – Joel Rechlicz

Roman Hamrlik – John Carlson

Jeff Schultz – Dennis Wideman

Dmitry Orlov – Julien Brouillette

Braden Holtby

Philipp Grubauer
