First period

  • It didn’t take long for this one to get fun. Dominating in the offensive zone, Marcus Johansson had room in the slot and teed up Mike Knuble for a wide-open shot. It banked off a Columbus defender and hit the right post. Blue Jackets goalie Curtis Sanford then stopped Alexander Semin on the doorstep.
  • When the Caps got on the power play, it looked familiar. That’s not a good thing. They had trouble gaining the zone and couldn’t find any chemistry when there. An Alex Ovechkin pass to no one at the point was one case of the blunders.
  • Mike Knuble’s power-play theory is “shoot the puck” a lot. It worked on the second Caps power play, as Dennis Wideman’s wrister from the point got through traffic and beat Sanford. 1-0 Caps
  • That “show-me” line of Chris Bourque, Cody Eakin and Mathieu Perreault did just that. Perreault has some nice work along the boards to get the puck to Bourque behind the net, Bourque delivered a nice back-handed shovel pass to Eakin in the slot and Eakin finished it off. But only one (or maybe two) of them can make the roster. 2-0 Caps

Second period

  • Another power-play goal for the Caps, this one brought to you by Roman Hamrlik. He had plenty of time with open ice above the circles and found Perreault wide open on the right side of the net. Perreault is small, but he can score. 3-0 Caps

Caps starting lineup: Michal Neuvirth in goal, Jeff Schultz and Mike Green on defense, Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom and Troy Brouwer up front.

Blue Jackets starting lineup: Curtis Sanford in net, Fedor Tyutin and Nick Holden on defense, Jared Boll, Andrew Joudrey and Maksim Mayorov up front.

The Caps’ lines were just as at the morning skate:

Alex Ovechkin – Nicklas Backstrom – Troy Brouwer

Alexander Semin – Marcus Johansson – Mike Knuble

Cody Eakin – Mathieu Perreault – Chris Bourque

Matt Hendricks – Jeff Halpern – Jay Beagle

Jeff Schultz – Mike Green

Roman Hamrlik – Dennis Wideman

Dmitry Orlov – Patrick McNeill

Michal Neuvirth is set to start.

The Blue Jackets brought the bare minimum of NHL veterans to the game, dressing the likes of Antoine Vermette, Derick Brassard and Marc Methot.
