Look at the preseason numbers without any past context and it seems like Mathieu Perreault is a lock to make the Capitals. He leads the team with two goals and two assists, seemingly outshining Cody Eakin and Mattias Sjogren.
And there’s a familiarity with the system that Perreault has, too. Because of that, Perreault being off the ice for the past couple days should not affect his chances of making the team.
“I think we know enough of Matty to know another day isn’t going to change the way we feel about him,” coach Bruce Boudreau said. “We just want him to be ready to hopefully play on Sunday. So I don’t think it hurts him, no.”
Perreault won’t be in the lineup Friday when the Caps host the Sabres. The goal is for him to be back at practice Saturday.
“We’re hoping he’s back skating,” Boudreau said “If we want him to play Sunday, he’ll have to skate [Saturday].”
Eakin is expected to center the third line Friday night, a group that includes Jason Chimera and Joel Ward. Sjogren is set to be a healthy scratch.
