Capitals morning skate update: Bottom-six changes

← return to Capitals Watch

Typically when the Washington Capitals win, Dale Hunter is loathe to change things, including his tie. But Monday’s Game 3 is expected to feature some different line combinations.

The top two lines remain the same, though there were some tweaks to the bottom two. The most notable change appears to be Matt Hendricks centering the fourth line. Hendricks is 5-for-10 in the series on faceoffs.

Every player was on the ice for the morning skate.

Mike Knuble, Mattias Sjogren, Jeff Halpern and Cody Eakin are expected to again be the healthy scratches up front, with Dmitry Orlov and John Erskine out on defense.

Braden Holtby and Dany Sabourin were the only goalies out there for the full skate, meaning Sabourin will be the backup again Monday. Michal Neuvirth reported feeling better Sunday and joined his teammates a bit later to work with goaltending coach Dave Prior.

Tomas Vokoun stepped onto the ice for a solo workout after the team left the ice. He was not taking shots but instead just doing positioning movements around the crease.

He spent 20 minutes on the ice, working a bit with Prior. The 35-year-old goaltender is nursing a groin injury.

Here’s a look at the expected lineup:

Alex Ovechkin - Brooks Laich - Troy Brouwer

Marcus Johansson - Nicklas Backstrom - Alexander Semin

Jason Chimera - Jay Beagle - Mathieu Perreault

Keith Aucoin - Matt Hendricks - Joel Ward

Karl Alzner - John Carlson

Roman Hamrlik - Mike Green

Jeff Schultz - Dennis Wideman

Braden Holtby

Dany Sabourin
