BOSTON | To follow the Internet meme, Mike Knuble was freed for Game 4 of the Washington Capitals-Boston Bruins series, thanks to Nicklas Backstrom’s suspension. But that won’t be his only action.
Even with Backstrom returning for Saturday’s Game 5, Knuble will remain in the lineup. He didn’t seem too surprised that his performance Thursday night earned him another chance.
“I just tried to come in and work hard. I thought Joel [Ward] and Keith [Aucoin] and I have good chemistry,” Knuble said Saturday afternoon. “So I think we can be effective.”
They’ll be back together for Game. Mathieu Perreault will be scratched. He took a slash in Game 4 but coach Dale Hunter on Friday said Perreault was fine and would play.
Knuble talked before Game 4 about adjusting to the speed of playoff hockey and came away feeling good about his performance after being a healthy scratch.
“It’s more than a regular-season [game]. Guys are playing hard. The stakes are high, so I don’t think you come into it too lightly,” he said. “You come in ready to play and you’re not taken by surprise at all. I think that’s the biggest thing: to know what you’re getting into.”
