NEW YORK | Give Ottawa Senators fans a lot of credit for a clever tribute to captain Daniel Alfredsson. To honor No. 11, They count down to 11 minutes left in each period and chant “Alfie, Alfie.”
New York Rangers fans at Madison Square Garden took that over in the first round, counting down to 11 minutes remaining and chanting “Alfie sucks.”
Now, Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is getting the same treatment. In Game 1 on Saturday, Rangers fans counted down to eight minutes left in each period before chanting “Ovi sucks.”
Ovechkin didn’t know what it was all about.
“No. No. I hear Ovi sucks, yeah. But I didn’t know it was like 1, 2,” he said.
When reporters explained the genesis, Ovechkin smiled in apparent appreciation.
“That’s good,” he said. “I hope they’re going to scream, ‘Ovi’s good.’ ”
