Nicklas Backstrom held court with reporters on Saturday for the first time since speaking in San Jose on Jan. 6. Here’s the full transcript:
Q: How are you feeling?
Backstrom: “I’m doing good. It’s a long process, but I’m getting better.
Q: What is the process
Backstrom: “I’m doing the same process as Jay Beagle. As you can see, he’s skating and he’s playing.”
Q: How tough?
Backstrom: “Obviously you want to be out there and play with the team. But this is the situation now; you’ve got to deal with it. I think [trainer Greg Smith] Smitty’s doing a good job with me, and I’m getting better.
Q: Have you been doing off-ice exercises?
Backstrom: “Lately I’ve been doing the bike. I think I’m improving. It takes time, but I’m on a good program right now. So hopefully I get better soon.”
Q: Good sign doing bike?
Q: Symptoms now?
Backstrom: “I’m not a hundred percent to skate right now, so we’ll see when it’s going to be time for me to take the ice. Right now I’m taking it day by day and see how I feel.”
Q: You’ve been at games more lately. Anything change to be around team more often?
Backstrom: “Yeah… No, not really. So that’s a good sign.”
Q: Any idea when you’ll be back?
Backstrom: “No, I don’t. If you want that answer, you’ve got to ask Smitty, I think. But other than that, we take it day by day and see how it goes.”
Q: Are you here [at rink] every day?
Backstrom: “Yeah, I’m trying to be here every day.”
Q: How often goes Smitty check you out?
Backstrom: “Every day. So he’s taking care of me.”
