Dale Hunter refused to name Michal Neuvirth his starter for Monday night’s game against the San Jose Sharks, even though Tomas Vokoun’s illness made it likely. The 23-year-old Washington Capitals goaltender himself confirmed he was getting the nod.
But then at 6 p.m the Caps announced the recall of Braden Holtby from the Hershey Bears. And when the team came onto the ice for warm-ups, Holtby was first onto the ice. He’ll start against San Jose.
Holtby is playing for the second straight day after starting for the Bears on Sunday.
There are several prominent scouts scheduled to be in the press box for Monday night’s game, including two from the Columbus Blue Jackets and Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier. That is no definitive indication of anything, though certainly noteworthy with the Feb. 27 trade deadline looming.
