TAMPA, Fla. | Keith Aucoin’s latest stint with the Washington Capitals netted him a few days flying on the team charter a couple days and earning a nice NHL salary. It didn’t include his getting into any more games.
That’s probably OK with the Caps, who called up Aucoin on Thursday before this road trip to be the extra forward, just in case. On Sunday they sent him back to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League.
Aucoin’s demotion is likely further confirmation that Mike Green is doing well moving forward. The defenseman returned to the lineup Saturday night and played 14:14, as the Caps dressed seven defensemen.
It’s likely the same will happen Monday at the Carolina Hurricanes, though if Green’s ready to take a full shift, Jay Beagle could go back in. Beagle played well Friday night at the Florida Panthers, registering four shots and generating a bunch of quality scoring chances.
Aucoin, meanwhile, spent both games in the press box after a couple days of scratches skates. The Bears were shut out 6-0 by the Providence Bruins on Friday. without the AHL scoring star, but they beat the Manchester Monarchs on Saturday.
