TAMPA, Fla. | Preseason expectations for the Washington Capitals included visions of the Stanley Cup, or at least the Prince of Wales Trophy. With less than a third of the season remaining, they’re out of a playoff spot.
So perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising that the Caps earned a dubious distinction in the NHLPA 2012 players poll, conducted by CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada. Washington was chosen third when asked “Which team is overrated?” with 15 percent of the vote.
The poll, which got 318 responses from players around the league, pegged the Vancouver Canucks as the top choice and the Toronto Maple Leafs second.
Alex Ovechkin came in fifth among the toughest forwards to play against, getting three percent of the vote.
