RALEIGH, N.C. | Tensions were high in the final seconds of Friday night’s game between the Washington Capitals and Florida Panthers. A big scrum erupted after the clock hit 0:00, but something happened shortly before that.
Kris Versteeg cross-checked Jeff Halpern, a play that was not penalized at the time but something that earned the Panthers forward a $2,500 fine from the NHL on Sunday.
The department of player safety announced the fine at about 11 p.m., with the note that $2,500 is the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement.
The cross-check occurred with three seconds left Friday night. Halpern took two big faceoffs in the final seconds to help preserve a 2-1 Caps win.
