In a scene straight out a movie, Cody Eakin walked back into the Washington Capitals’ practice facility Thursday afternoon, hours after practice wrapped up, and left with his red equipment bag and a pile of sticks.
That’s because the Caps sent him back to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League, just another trip back up I-83 for the 20-year-old center. A team spokesman confirmed the move to The Washington Times.
Eakin has four goals and four assists in 29 games with the Caps this season, but something had to give at least in the lineup with Alex Ovechkin coming off suspension Saturday afternoon. Eakin apparently drew the short straw.
Eakin played just 6:03 on Wednesday night at the Florida Panthers and 6:13 Tuesday night at the Tampa Bay Lightning.
This move likely means enforcer Joel Rechlicz will be in the lineup Saturday at the Montreal Canadiens, just as he wished.
