RALEIGH, N.C. | Mike Green wanted more playing time in his second game back in the Washington Capitals’ lineup. Fourteen minutes wasn’t enough in his return.

To do that, the Caps are back to six defensemen for Monday night’s game at the Carolina Hurricanes, with Dmitry Orlov out due to illness, a team spokesman said. The 20-year-old Russian is listed as day-to-day.

Orlov has played 40 games with Washington since being called up in mid-November. Earlier in the day, coach Dale Hunter said it would be hard choosing which defenseman wouldn’t play.

“They’re all NHL guys and so they all want to play, so it makes it always a tough decision. Which is a good decision,” he said. “If it was an easy decision, then you don’t have the depth. But we got great depth with all of them can play.”

Orlov has struggled in recent games since suffering a broken nose that forced him to wear a full cage. He admitted it was bothering him.Orlov has two goals and eight assists in 40 games.

With Orlov out and Green able to take full shifts, the Caps’ pairings are Karl Alzner with John Carlson, Jeff Schultz with Green and Roman Hamrlik with Dennis Wideman.

Green and Schultz are back together with the Caps trying to reignite some past success.

“Definitely in the past I heard they played well together,” Hunter said. “It’s an option for us tonight, too.”
