In what could be an indicator of Mike Green’s health or another roster move, the Washington Capitals recalled defenseman Tomas Kundratek from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League, the team announced Tuesday night.

Kundratek had eight points (six goals, two assists) in 21 games with Hershey since being acquired from the New York Rangers for forward Francois Bouchard. He’s a right-shooting defenseman, like Green, who aggravated his groin injury Saturday night in San Jose.

Green was sent home early from the Caps’ California road trip along with Nicklas Backstrom (head) on Monday before Washington played at the Los Angeles Kings. Both players are officially listed as day-to-day, but Green was also given that status for a month and a half before he returned to the lineup.

Recalling Kundratek means the active roster stands at 24 players, one over the NHL limit. It was not immediately clear what the other move was to get under the limit. Possibilities include placing Green or Backstrom on the injured list, a waiver move or a trade.

Kundratek will wear No. 36.
