I-83, the main road from Hershey to Washington, used to be Karl Alzner’s highway of choice when he shuttled up and down from the AHL to the NHL and back. Right now, it’s Cody Eakin’s, as the Washington Capitals recalled the forward yet again on Thursday.

Mike Green (groin) was be placed on long term injured reserve, a team spokesman confirmed. Green is eligible to return Feb. 1. His $5.25 million cap hit comes off the books for the time being, giving the Caps significant flexibility.

Nicklas Backstrom (head) was placed on IR earlier this week to make room for defenseman Tomas Kundratek.

Coach Dale Hunter said earlier Thursday that there was no timetable on Green returning to skating.

Eakin’s presence gives the Caps an extra forward. The 20-year-old forward put up three goals and three assists in his 19 games with Washington earlier this season.
