Mike Green is on long-term injured reserve. He cannot possibly play for the Washington Capitals until Feb. 1 as a result.
Even that seems like a long shot, though coach Dale Hunter said that “timing his everything” with putting Green on LTIR shortly before the All-Star break.
“He’s just busy getting more strength. With the All-Star break coming up, so he can come back the second game back,” Hunter said. “It’s pretty good decision right now. We wish we had him, mind you. But to give him some rest and get him stronger and keep rehabbing a lot.”
Hunter said that surgery was not in the plans and that Green would rehab around the team. Asked if this was an easy call because the team didn’t expect him back in the coming weeks, Hunter stumbled.
“We didn’t expect him to, you know, get, right now his strength is not good enough, so with the All-Star Game coming up in days or something,” the coach said. “Timing is everything and with the All-Star break, he’ll get lots of time to get it stronger.”
Green has missed 31 of the Caps’ 41 games this season with groin and ankle injuries.
