Tomas Kundratek walked out into the rain outside Ballston Common Mall in Arlington carrying a giant red Washington Capitals equipment bag and a handful of sticks. It was the prototypical image of a player who was heading down to the minor leagues.
Indeed, Kundratek was sent down to the Hershey Bears on Monday after a five-game NHL cameo, a team spokesman confirmed. He did not play more than 12 minutes in any game and was a healthy scratch Sunday at the Pittsburgh Penguins.
“For me to play five games in NHL and get the experience, it’s a lot of ice time,” Kundratek said Saturday. “I think it’s pretty good ice time.”
Kundratek, 21, did not register a point during this call-up. This move means either John Erskine or Jeff Schultz will be in the lineup Tuesday night against the Boston Bruins.
