Dennis Wideman picked by Team Chara in NHL All-Star Draft

Dennis Wideman couldn’t get over the excitement of being named an NHL All-Star. The fantasy draft was the necessary step toward actually getting onto one of the All-Star teams.

On Thursday night, Zdeno Chara made him part of “Team Chara” at NHL All-Star Weekend, taking the Washington Capitals defenseman with in the 15th round of in the fantasy draft.

Wideman was Chara’s teammate with the Boston Bruins from 2007 to 2010.

This is Wideman’s first All-Star appearance in the 30-year-old’s seventh NHL season.

“I think it’s going to be an experience. Obviously guys that have been there eight, nine, 10 times and stuff like that, they might want a break if they’ve been there every year,” Wideman said. “For me and for guys that probably get picked their first time, it’s really exciting to get a chance to go and see what it’s all about. I’ve been watching it on TV and stuff like that for years. It should be exciting.”

Wideman has nine goals and 25 assists at the break. He’s the Caps’ only representative in the game after suspended captain Alex Ovechkin withdrew.
