OTTAWA | Roman Hamrlik wanted Dennis Wideman to stay away from the hardest shot competition at this weekend’s NHL All-Star SuperSkills competition because he couldn’t beat Zdeno Chara. But Chara and alternate captain Joffrey Lupul picked Wideman for the event anyway.

Wideman will be in the event with Team Chara teammates Luke Adam, Dion Phaneuf and Chara and Team Alfredsson competitors Justin Faulk, Jason Spezza, Shea Weber and Daniel Alfredsson.

“I’ve never used a radar gun. I’m just nervous,” Wideman said with a smile. “I hope I’m not the first one to shoot like 85. I’m going to put everything I have into it. If I get 90 I’ll be happy.”

It’s likely a two-man competition for hardest shot between Chara and Weber.

Wideman will also shoot one-timers as part of the skills challenge relay. No accuracy shooting or elimination shootout for the Washington Capitals’ lone representative in Ottawa.
