PHILADELPHIA | Welcome back to the Washington Capitals lineup, Joel Ward.
Not because Dale Hunter all of a sudden changed his mind about the right wing but because Alexander Semin won’t play Thursday night at the Philadelphia Flyers. Semin was not on the ice for pregame warm-ups.
Semin’s is listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury, the team announced. He has not skated since Monday night’s game at the Detroit Red Wings.
Ward is expected to start on a line with Matt Hendricks and Jeff Halpern.
Dale Hunter said Wednesday that Semin would play. Thursday afternoon he was a game-time decision.
In goal, Braden Holtby makes his second straight start. He was the first healthy goalie off the ice at the morning skate and all signs pointed to him getting the nod. He did his usual starting routine on the bench and then led the Caps onto the ice for warm-ups.
“It was nice to get back into and back into it with the D core here and feel it out a bit [Monday at Detroit],” Holtby said. “If I get another chance to start, then I’ll feel a lot more comfortable.”
The Flyers had no such subterfuge: their lineup was the same and Ilya Bryzgalov was announced as the starter Tuesday.
