Capitals practice update: Tomas Vokoun back on ice

Tomas Vokoun wasn’t healthy enough to step into action Friday night against the New Jersey Devils as Michal Neuvirth and the Washington Capitals were getting shelled. And the team had to call up Braden Holtby to serve as the backup Sunday night against the Philadelphia Flyers, given the veteran’s lower-body injury.

But Dale Hunter was optimistic when asked about Vokoun on Sunday afternoon.

“He’s good,” the coach said. “He’ll be back on the ice tomorrow.”

Vokoun was back on the ice for Monday’s practice, but it appeared as if he wasn’t feeling great enough for the Caps to send Holtby back to the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League. Instead, all three goalies were on the ice.

It’s uncertain who will start Tuesday’s game against the Carolina Hurricanes. Neuvirth has started five in a row.

The Caps’ lines at practice seemed to indicate a demotion for Troy Brouwer and a return to the press box for Mike Knuble:

Alex Ovechkin – Marcus Johansson – Brooks Laich

Jason Chimera – Mathieu Perreault – Alexander Semin

Matt Hendricks – Jay Beagle – Troy Brouwer

Keith Aucoin – Jeff Halpern – Joel Ward
