Mathieu Perreault became the eighth Washington Capitals player to agree to sign in Europe during the NHL lockout. He will play for HIFK Helsinki in Finland’s SM-Liiga.
The deal has some final paperwork to go before it’s official. Perreault will be the first Caps player this season to play in the Finnish league.
Perreault signed a two-year contract with the Caps as a restricted free agent this past summer, worth just over $2 million. The 24-year-old center said he was told he would be a top-six forward for Washington in 2012-13.
With the lockout wiping out at least the first two months of the season, Perreault will try to find some success in Helsinki.
