Even if the NHL lockout does not end soon, Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom will be teammates very soon.

Backstrom signed with Dynamo Moscow of Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League, his agent confirmed in an email Thursday.

“Nicklas has signed with Dynamo,” Marc Levine wrote. “No further comment at this time.”

Backstrom, who talked in September about weighing options, chose the KHL over the Swedish Elite League in his homeland. According to the Swedish news outlet SVT, it had a lot to do with Ovechkin.

“Ovechkin’s been calling since he came to Moscow,” Backstrom told SVT. “It’ll be fun. I’m leaving today.”

Backstrom had been skating at Kettler Capitals Iceplex to stay in shape.
